History of the Department

Letter from President George W Bush
Letter from Governor Perry

The Texas Department of Banking is accountable to Texas citizens for holding to integrity in its work, for knowing right from wrong, staying the course, making the tough decisions, and doing the right thing.   May you gain from recalling past events, so that history will not be repeated.

Our decisions cannot be for expediency.  Our vision must be for the long-term, for the good of our state- Texas . And our choices and actions must always be “Without compromise, fear or favor…”

Randall S. James
Texas Banking Commissioner
June 30, 2005

Department Celebrating our 100th Anniversary

Comments from the Centennial Celebration, Sept. 12, 2005

The Texas Department of Banking celebrates its centennial in 2005. One of the projects that we are undertaking to help commemorate this milestone is the development of a written history of the Department for the first 100 years. Our mission for the past 100 years has been "to ensure Texas has a safe and sound financial services system." To that end, we've been out beating the bushes, looking for stories, photographs, personal papers, ephemera, memorabilia, wanted posters, diaries, old bank books, and basically anything related to state banks for the period from 1905 to the present day. Essentially, we've created a scrapbook. There are 331 state banks today, but many more have come and gone. All these banks have played an important role in the growth of Texas.
